ENGAGE: MY IDEAL WALLET

The wallet that I would find ideal is a classic leather wallet. It is durable, hard to get lost, and you can fit anything that you would want without it being too bulky. It is aesthetically pleasing so that I could still be happy with my wallet even if I ran out of money. It has patches that symbolizes my personality, and I find it cool, as well as pretty. It also has enough space for coins, small drawings from friends, used movie tickets, receipts, cards (discount, ID, ATM), and I can still insert pictures of my favorite people. It also has two sides where I can put random things.

ENGAGE: THE INTERVIEW

I got to interview my classmate and friend, Jerick about his wallet and for him, his wallet symbolizes his entire being. KPOP or Korean Pop Culture have inspired him in many ways that he wants it to be seen in his wallet (the word BIAS, KPOP icons, finger heart sign, soju, lightstick). It also includes credit cards because according to him it is the ideal status symbol that means you are financially stable. It is also his aim to put VIP tickets in his wallet because it is something expensive and as a KPOP fan, it is the ultimate goal to have. He also keeps his rosary and pictures in his wallet to remind him of his family, values, and friends.

ENGAGE: DIGGING DEEPER

His wallet symbolizes a lot of things for jerick, financial stability, memories, and identity. He is fond of KPOP and he believes that it empowers him to become better everyday that is why most of his wallet’s aesthetics are inspired by the Korean Culture. Aside from that a rosary is also present in his wallet which symbolizes his family values, religious affiliation, and virtues. Aside from that he wants his wallet to be a portrait of himself and his friends, it should be secured, medium size, and should have big pockets.

ENGAGE: GOALS

The goal that Jerick wants to achieve in his wallet is it should have a sense of his identity. The most practical way to attain this wallet is to have secured compartments that could protect his VIP tickets, rosary, and pictures. There should also be a part where ATM and other cards could be put safely. His money should be allocated also in a safe and clean space in the wallet.

ENGAGE: INSIGHTS

Jerick is a very sentimental person who likes his wallet to be something personal where it should represent his identity well. It should also be aesthetically pleasing that includes kpop references. He wants important things such as VIP tickets, cards (ATM, ID, etc.) and money. All in all his wallet is a combination of both aesthetics, and practicality.

EXPLAIN: POINT OF VIEW

In conclusion, Jerick needs to be secured of his belongings that he considers personal. It should be kept in a big compartment with a lock. It should be aesthetic and should accurately describe him as a person, as a friend, as a son, and as a student.

EXPLAIN: IDEA GENERATION (RADICAL WAYS)

Problem: Jerick needs a wallet that would be aesthetically pleasing, can make him feel financially secure, and has a sense of it being personal, it should look like he owns it and all of the kpop references are visible.

  1. Sewing KPOP references patches.

2. Putting large compartments for important cards.

3. Inserting a compartment where pictures could be put.

4. Designing extra security for protection.

5. Adding several features that highlights the aesthetic of the wallet.

ELABORATE: PRESENTING THE SOLUTION AND FEEDBACK

I showed Jerick the whole idea, and explained to him how it will meet his ideals. He likes the idea very much and would very much prefer what I presented as his ideal wallet. All the features that I presented the one that made him hesitant is the key, because it could be easily lost thus making it very hard to get the money or things he needed from the wallet.

IRITERATE (NEW SOLUTION)

The whole aesthetic and wallet design would remain the same except for the new and improved security measures that are both practical and equipped with high technology.

PROTOTYPE

The prototype I’ve chosen is the digital scrapbook and album that could make him design his own scrapbook and album that features all the kpop groups he likes.

FINAL SHARING OF SOLUTION AND FEEDBACK

Ideas and feedbacks have been shared, and after assessing the prototype and the presented supposed ideal wallet, these are the insights shared:

WHAT WORKED?

All of the designs presented reflected on Jerick’s ideals and aspirations. It met her standards and believes he everything presented would be practical and would fit his interests.

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED?

The size of the wallet is somewhat still small for his liking. Design and aesthetic wise it is perfect.

QUESTIONS…

The main concern of Jerick is the size of the wallet itself for it maybe too small for his liking.

IDEAS

The best solution for his question is to expand the size of the wallet without neglecting it’s design, features, and security. It should be adjusted by being not to big, and not to small, it should just fit right in the pocket but you can still insert everything to it, especially to it’s compartments and still be functional.

ASSESSMENT OF THE DESIGNING PROCESS

  1. How did talking to your interviewee inform/influence your design?

My interview with Jerick helps me understand how wallet could symbolize so many things including yourself. It help me understand him better as a person, as a classmate, and as a friend. Knowing him helped me how to make this wallet so that it would be fitted to his personality and likes.

2. How did testing and getting feedback impact your final design?

In the first interview, there are several flaws in the wallet I made but because of the feedback I was able to create a more feasible product for his liking and still captures who he is.

3. What was the most challenging part of the process for you?

The most difficult part is he wants many things in the wallet and I find it hard to insert everything without neglecting the others because this wallet needs to become wholesome and should include everything.
